Why was Syria split into two by the victors of WW1?

The newly-formed Kingdom of Syria was established in late 1919 and overthrown by the French the following summer. The French then divided Syria with the English,the English getting Palestine or lower Syria. Was this for economic reasons - the new oil pipeline- or out religious fanaticism? Or was it pressure from zionist groups,backed by the Rothschild banking concern?
