Why cant we American 's or am I being naive?

Why cant we Americans have a vote on the big things that effect our lives such as War,Spending tax payers money,etc .I mean with the inventions of commuters we can now vote on many of the issues that would take months to tally in the old days.Why cant we have it where the popular vote wins and then there would be no war right now or bailing out losers or even if we should trade with other countries.I mean why does Washington think they know what is good for us .Maybe they did in the good ole day but not so much now.Please be nice to me some people are really hateful here.Im just asking
